Knee replacement surgery is the minimally invasive surgical procedure in which the knee joint (which “articulates” three bones: the upper end of the tibia, the lower end of the femur and the kneecap) is replaced with a prosthesis.

This operation is necessary when the patient suffers wear and tear of the joint caused by an accident or impact that has fractured the kneecap, or suffers osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, bone dysplasia or avascular necrosis, among other causes, that limit his mobility and cause him pain.

How is the treatment performed?

This procedure is usually performed under spinal (or epidural) anesthesia and usually requires 1-2 hours.

The surgical intervention consists of:

Making an incision of about 20 cm
Remove and cut the lower part of the kneecap and section the end of the femur and the head of the tibia
Place the prosthesis and secure all the pieces
Rebuild muscles, ligaments and tendons and suture

What recovery time do I need in Spain?

The recovery time until you can return to your country after knee replacement surgery is approximately 15 days.

Once you are back in your country, you will have to follow the instructions given by your specialist doctor in order to recover within 3 months. After that, you will be able to return to your normal life in 4 to 6 months.

We recommend that you stay in Spain during the entire recovery process. You will need to stay here for about 3 months to monitor your progress, and between 4 and 6 months to achieve full recovery.
