Hip Replacement Surgery

Hip Replacement Surgery is the minimally invasive surgical procedure in which the hip joint (formed by the head of the femur and the acetabulum of the pelvis) is replaced by a prosthesis. The joint replacement can be partial or total depending on the pathology and the degree of evolution.

This operation is necessary when the patient has suffered an acetabular hip fracture, a fracture of the neck or head of the femur, or suffers from arthrosis or some degenerative or tumoral disease of the hip, among other causes, which limit the patient’s mobility and cause him/her pain.

Hip replacement surgery may be the best option when pain interferes with your daily activities and non-surgical treatments do not help or are no longer effective.

How is the treatment performed?

This procedure is normally performed under general anaesthesia (sometimes only epidural or locoregional is used) and the approximate duration is between 2 and 3 hours.

This surgical intervention consists of:

Cleaning the affected area
Remove the head of the femur and the acetabulum of the hip
Fitting the prosthesis and securing all parts
Rebuilding muscles and tendons and suturing

What recovery time do I need in Spain?

The estimated recovery time until you can return home after hip replacement surgery is about 20 days.

Once you are back in your country, you will have to follow the instructions given by your specialist doctor in order to recover within 4 months. After that, you will be able to return to your normal life in 6 to 12 months.

We recommend that you stay in Spain for the entire recovery process, and to do this you will have to stay here for around 4 months to monitor your progress and between 6 and 12 months to achieve a full recovery.
